Off the record: the biggest sports stories you might have missed this weekend

Excitable commentators, amazing waves, and how to turn your dustpan into a putter.

UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN glued to the internet all weekend, there’s a chance that some weird and wonderful sporting tidbits might have slipped through the cracks. Here’s a run-down of some of our favourites…

1. When basketball commentators go wild

This buzzer-beater to give Lindsey Wilson College a one-point win over Georgetown was obviously pretty good — but how good was it? And how are we supposed to know? If only the commentator could give us some sort of audible clue…

2. Every putt counts

The world of golf is talking about putters again this weekend after Matt Every appeared at the Sony Open using this contraption, which looks more like a fancy dustpan than a golf club.

Is it any use? Well, he led going into the final round in Hawaii before blowing it, so maybe not. Then again, maybe this rather unusual interview with the Golf Channel was playing on his mind.

3. Once a legend, always a legend

El Diego’s still got it, as he showed on Saturday.

4. Making waves

This amazing video surfaced again over the weekend. It was shot off the coast of Teahupoʻo, a Tahitian village famous for its surfing, last August on a day described by the French Navy as a “double code red” — which basically means that you can be arrested just for going in the water. And yet, these surfers did.

5. We don’t really understand this either…

But apparently Mark Cavendish likes things in straight lines. Other things which Mark Cavendish likes include sticking stickers on his head and practicing the moves to Madonna’s “Vogue”.
