On the plane: Ireland's Chloe Magee qualifies for Olympics

The star faces an anxious wait to see if she has also qualified for the mixed doubles event.

IRISH BADMINTON STAR Chloe Magee has received official confirmation that she has qualified for the Olympics via the BWF Olympic Games Qualification list.

The world number 44 was 26 on the list of 46 players who have qualifed in the ladies singles.

Unfortunately for Magee, she was not as successful in the mixed doubles event.

Along with brother Sam Magee, she only made third reserve on the Olympic list in spot 19 on the final list, despite some impressive results from the pair.

Scott Evans will also be made to wait nervously, as he was position 37 on the final Olympic list leaving him at first reserve for the Games.

Speaking following the news, Badminton Ireland National Coach Daniel Magee said:

“It is great we have three players in contention for Olympic selection. Chloe and Sam have done great in mixed this year but it’s tough qualifying with just 16 pairs. Chloe had a great first half of the year and had really done enough in terms of qualification by the Irish Open in December. Scott’s solid performances of late has ensured he has a great chance of selection on the second list in a few week’s time.”

Confirmation of all the Olympic selections will be announced on May 18.
