PHIL NEVILLE HAS been appointed as the new assistant manager of Spanish club Valencia.
The former Manchester United and Everton defender will become part of manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s backroom staff at the Mestella following the resignation of Ian Cathro.
Cathro is expected to be announced as Steve McClaren’s deputy at Newcastle United this week.
Neville, who has previous coaching experience with England U21s and Manchester United, has been working as a pundit for the BBC since leaving his role at Old Trafford at the end of David Moyes’ ill-fated tenure.
The 38-year-old turned down the opportunity to move to Real Sociedad with Moyes last year but Valencia’s owner, Peter Lim, is always a shareholder at Salford City – the club co-owned by the ‘Class of 92′.
“Phil has great experience at the top competitive level but above all he has very clear knowledge and values that fit our team and our club, the philosophy that we defend: he always was a great club servant,” Nuno told Valencia’s official website.
“We are and we want a strong, organised team. He’s going to help us a lot, I believe.”
Valencia finished fourth in La Liga last term and will hope to negotiate the Champions League qualifiers to take their place in the group stages for the first time in three years.
