10 Irish players feature as Burnley edge Preston at Deepdale

Sean Maguire produced two assists, while Callum Robinson was on target.

OUTSIDE OF DOMESTIC football, it’s hard to think of a more Irish-oriented club game than Preston v Burnley and the two teams met at Deepdale tonight, with the visitors prevailing 3-2.

No fewer than 10 Irish players featured either from the start or off the bench. For Burnley, Jeff Hendrick, Stephen Ward, Jimmy Dunne, Kevin Long and Jon Walters all got minutes under their belt.

Meanwhile, Preston’s team included Callum Robinson, Graham Burke, Sean Maguire, Alan Browne and Daryl Horgan.

The hosts took the lead on 22 minutes, when Maguire played through Josh Harrop, who finished coolly.

The Clarets equalised shortly thereafter. After Hendrick’s initial shot was blocked, Aaron Lennon fired home to draw his side level.

Following a raft of substitutions, Burnley went ahead 18 minutes from time, as Dan Agyei got on the end of a Walters cross.

But Preston equalised two minutes later, and Maguire was again the creator, as he played an incisive pass to Robinson, who finished with aplomb.

It looked like the two sides would have to settle for a draw, but youngster Dwight McNeil’s volley from the edge of the box on 84 minutes won it for Sean Dyche’s men.
