THIS WEEKEND’S ENTIRE Italian football calendar, including the Serie A, has been postponed after the death of Livorno player Piermario Morosini.

The 25-year-old fell to the ground in the 33rd minute of his club’s Serie B match against Pescara on Saturday, with medical staff immediately running onto the pitch with cardiac massage being performed on the player.

The game was abandoned and Morosini left the stadium in an ambulance, slipping into a pharmacological coma before passing away. He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

He had been on-loan to the Tuscan outfit from Udinese, with his parent club due to face Inter on Saturday evening.

Confirming Morosini’s death Dr De Blasi stated: “It was a cardiac arrest. He (Morosini) arrived dead at the hospital, he never recovered.”

No words

Pescara president Daniele Sebastiani added: “Unfortunately, they tell me now that the boy has died. He had three cardiac arrests, one after the other. I have no words, really …”

The incident comes only a month after Bolton’s Fabrice Muamba collapsed during an FA Cup game against Tottenham at White Hart Lane, with the midfielder now recovering after having to fight for his life.

Puerta Bonita defender Sergio Granero survived a heart attack the day after the Muamba ordeal during a match in Spain’s third division against Pozuela.

A statement on the Lega Serie A website read:

“The football world mourns the tragedy that occurred this afternoon in Pescara, where during the game between the hosts and Livorno, the player Piermario Morosini slumped to the ground suffering from a heart attack. Transported to the hospital, the young midfielder was put into an induced coma, but died at around 5pm.

“The FIGC has suspended, in memory of Piermario, all games scheduled over the weekend.”
