Knocking on the door

Towell eager for more first team football with Brighton

The Irish midfielder has had to make do with U21s matches since his debut for the Seagulls.

IRISH MIDFIELDER RICHIE Towell is keen to add to his one first team appearance for Brighton after lining out for the U21s.

The Dubliner, who joined the Championship promotion hopefuls from Dundalk in December, made his Seagulls debut in the 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Hull on 9 January.

Despite being named on the bench in recent weeks, however, Towell hasn’t featured in Chris Hughton’s team since then but played 90 minutes for their U21 side in the 0-0 draw with West Brom on Monday night.

“I thought we played well, they’re a decent side, but we controlled the game in spells and had good chances to win it,” Towell told the club’s website.

“On a personal level, it was good to get 90 minutes under my belt.

“I feel like I’m getting a bit sharper playing in a more natural position and it felt a lot better. I’ve been playing a bit higher compared to recent weeks and it was good to get back to a position that I’m used to, so I enjoyed it a lot more.

If I keep getting some minutes under my belt and I get sharper, then hopefully I can keep knocking on the manager’s door.”

Next up for Brighton, currently fourth in the table and six points off leaders Hull, is Brentford at home on Friday night.
