RONNIE O’SULLIVAN BOOKED his place in the third round of the English Open last night after coming from behind to beat Mark Davis 4-1, but had to do so with a swollen ankle.

O’Sullivan was given an exemption to wear trainers after threatening to ‘pull out’ if organisers made him wear the correct footwear, and running brand Saucony came to his aid.

The five-time world champion had caused controversy earlier in the week when he wore blue runners during his opening round win, but had been given permission to be exempt from the ‘standard dress code protocol’.

O’Sullivan lost the first frame but quickly seized the initiative by reeling off four in a row, including breaks of 68, 50, 136 and 134 to safely advance to the next round.
