IT MAY HAVE been a difficult transition to begin with, but Nike’s sponsorship of Rory McIlroy has been fruitful for both parties with the 27-year-old winning 12 tournaments, including two Majors, two Race to Dubai titles and the FedEx Cup since putting pen to paper in 2013.

And last night, McIlroy — who ranks 17th among the highest paid athletes in the world according to Forbes (with $42.6 million in earnings per year) — signed a multi-year extension with the brand.

With Nike no longer making equipment, McIlroy will continue to wear Nike gear while testing other clubs.

The original deal was believed to be worth $200 million over ten years and while no figures have been released for the extension, McIlroy appears to be happy with it:

“I’ve loved this company since I was a kid,” McIlroy said in the press release. “I’m really happy to continue this journey with Nike.”

The Northern Irishman is one of three former world number ones on Nike’s books with Jason Day signing on to join him and Tiger Woods in January.
