Russian boxer dies following title fight knockout

Russian Boxing Federation confirm that Roman Simakov, 27, has died following Monday’s WBC Asian title fight.

A RUSSIAN LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT boxer who was severely injured during a WBC Asian title fight has died.

Roman Simakov, 27, was left in a coma following a seventh-round knockout against Sergei Kovalev in Yekaterinburg on Monday night, Ria Novosti reports.

Simakov, who was defending his title, was stretchered unconscious from the ring and hospitalised but doctors were unable to revive him.

Igor Maruzov, the general secretary of the Russian Boxing Federation, told Ria Novosti that an investigation into Simakov’s death had been opened.

“I can only comment on the situation after the official investigation, which will evaluate the actions of the referee and the medical treatment the athlete received later,” Mazurov said.
