Sharp-shooting Ciaran Sheehan inspires Cork IT to win over GMIT on Leeside

The Cork senior hit 1-4 today.

Cork IT 1-12 GMIT 0-7

CORK SENIOR Ciaran Sheehan struck 1-4 to help propel Cork IT to victory in this afternoon’s Sigerson Cup first-round game against GMIT today.

The game was played at the CIT Sportsgrounds after being postponed last week due to an unplayable pitch.

And it was the home side who began brightest with Sheehan helping push them into a 1-5 to 0-1 lead by the 22nd minute as they overcame the pre-match loss of attacker Donal Óg Hodnett, the captain of the Cork Munster U21 winning football side last year, through injury.

By the interval GMIT had cut the deficit to five points, 1-5 to 0-3, but with Michael Vaughan in fine scoring form for CIT, the winners were ahead by 1-8 to 0-4 by the 40th minute.

Galway’s Johnny Ryan kept GMIT in touch and his points helped cut the gap to 1-9 to 0-7. However CIT finished stronger with former Cork All-Ireland U21 winner Stephen O’Donoghue impressing in defence. And points by Sheehan, Cork U21 Kevin Hallissey and Limerick senior Darragh Treacy sealed their victory to set them up with a quarter-final tie against Athlone IT next week.
