Disappointment for Tori Pena and Greg Broderick on a mixed day for the Irish in Rio

Both athletes fell short in their quest to progress.

IT WASN’T TO be for Irish athletes Tori Pena and Greg Broderick at Rio this afternoon as both failed to progress from the women’s pole vault and the individual jumping events respectively.

Pena, a 28-year-old from California but eligible to represent Ireland through her Derry grandmother, knew that hitting 4.60m would qualify her.

She cleared 4.30m at her second attempt but then fell short of 4.45m on two occasions and finished in 14th – not enough to see her through.

31-year-old Tipperary native Greg Broderick, on board Going Global, couldn’t do enough to finish inside the top 45 with an 8-point penalty in his first qualifier that proved quite costly.

It left him 53rd heading into the second qualifier and despite finishing 39th, there was just too much ground for him to make up.
