Fastest finish in welterweight title history ends Lawler's reign as UFC champion

Meanwhile, Karolina Kowalkiewicz overcame Rose Namajunas via split decision in the co-main event.

THE FASTEST FINISH in welterweight title history saw Tyron Woodley stun Robbie Lawler to claim the UFC welterweight title at UFC 201 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Last night’s first-round knockout, which finished in a time of 2.12, brought to an end Lawler’s run of five straight victories.

Woodley becomes the seventh new UFC champion in seven months since the turn of the year.

“I was in the back, I was relaxed, I was nervous that I wasn’t nervous,” Woodley told reporters after the fight. “I knew what Robbie brings to the table. This was not the fight I would have picked because Robbie is my teammate, but I’ve been picturing myself with the belt around my waist and I made it happen.”

In addition, Karolina Kowalkiewicz overcame Rose Namajunas via split decision in the co-main event.

Elsewhere on the main card, Jake Ellenberger beat Matt Brown via first-round knockout, Erik Perez overcame Francisco Rivera after a unanimous decision and Ryan Benoit beat Fredy Serrano following a split decision.
