Villa player arrested on suspicion of drink driving

Barry Bannan, who also has nine Scotland caps, was involved in a motorway crash at around 5.30am on Sunday.

ASTON VILLA HAVE launched an investigation into a car crash in which midfielder Barry Bannan was involved.

The 21-year-old, along with Shrewsbury striker James Collins, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a motorway crash at 5.30am on Sunday.

Bannan was not at Villa’s training ground on Monday, while manager Alex McLeish was unwilling to elaborate too much on the matter.

McLeish told reporters:

“There are internal inquiries and an investigation going on and that’s all I can really say at the moment. We felt it was best that he [Bannan] did not train with the team today.”

The midfielder has made 20 league appearances for Villa, including eight this season, and is regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects.

Collins, meanwhile, is an ex-Villa teammate of Bannan, who joined Shrewsbury in the January transfer window.
