The Fitz Factor! Davy's Wexford battle back from seven down to storm past Limerick

It looks like Limerick will be mired in Division 1B for another year.

DAVY FITZGERALD’S FIRST competitive game in charge of Wexford saw his new side produce a barnstorming comeback to see off Limerick at a lively Wexford Park.

The win leaves Wexford on course to duke it out with Galway for promotion to the top flight. A youthful Limerick outfit featuring 10 league debutants look set to remain in hurling’s second tier for another year.

Conor McDonald’s goal in the 62nd minute sent Wexford on their way to a 1-14 to 0-14 win that appeared extremely unlikely in the first-half.

A strong breeze helped the Treaty men to a 0-10 to 0-4 half-time lead, with Graeme Mulcahy and Diarmuid Byrnes among the scorers for John Kiely’s side.

Wexford, who operated with a sweeper throughout, scored an unanswered 1-7 between 49 and 63 minutes as a vocal home crowd urged their team to victory.

Galway ran riot in Tullamore today, handing out a 6-23 to 1-12 beating to Offaly to get their league campaign off to a flier.

The Tribesmen soared into a 4-9 to 1-8 half-time lead and continued to dominate after the interval.

Jason Flynn posted 2-10 in a devastating display, while Conor Cooney added 0-6 and Conor Whelan chipped in with a brace of goals.

Meanwhile, Kerry secured a remarkable 3-14 to 0-19 victory over Laois at Austin Stack Park.

Laois looked in control after a wind-assisted first-half, leading by 0-13 to 0-4 at the interval.

Padraig Boyle set the tone for the second period with a Kerry goal from a penalty two minutes after the restart, and further goals from Colum Harty and Boyle completed the impressive comeback.

Division 1B results

  • Offaly 1-12 Galway 6-23
  • Kerry 3-14 Laois 0-19
  • Wexford 1-14 Limerick 0-14
