WELL, THAT WAS dramatic.
Manchester United were eliminated from the Champions League on a night which saw twists and turns, and then more twists and more turns, in Group B.
Louis van Gaal’s side were beaten 3-2 by Wolfsburg in Germany, and were leapfrogged into second place by PSV who snatched a late 2-1 win over CSKA Moscow.
Here’s how the rollercoaster night unfolded:
7.56pm – United get off to the perfect start when Anthony Martial gives them the lead on 10 minutes.
7.59pm – United’s lead lasts just three minutes as Naldo gets a decisive touch on Ricardo Rodriguez’s free-kick to make it 1-1.
8.15pm – The hosts then hit the front on 29 minutes when Vieirinha finishes a flowing team move. With PSV and CSKA still scoreless in Eindhoven, United are OUT as things stand.
9.18pm – DRAMA! With United still trailing in Germany, CSKA take the lead against PSV thanks to Sergei Ignashevich’s penalty with just 14 minutes to play. Now as things stand, United are going through again…
9.20pm – WAIT! PSV are back on level terms, and back into second place. Luke de Jong equalises within two minutes.
9.25pm – WAIT AGAIN! United equalise in the 82nd minute! They’re going through thanks to the ever-prolific “Own Goal”; Josuha Guilavogui loops a header over Benaglio.
9.26pm – NO, HANG ON! United are level for less than 90 seconds before Wolfsburg are back in front. Naldo gets his second of the evening — and, again, as things stand, United are out. Either they need a late equaliser, or CSKA to grab a late winner in Holland.
9.28pm — It’s all over for United! Davy Proepper grabs PSV’s winner four minutes from time and Louis van Gaal’s side are consigned to the Europa League.
