PAUL REDMOND WILL be aiming for his first win in the Ultimate Fighting Championship this summer.

The Dubliner has confirmed the news, which was first reported in The Sun this morning, that he will face Robert Whiteford in a featherweight bout on Saturday, 18 July, at UFC Fight Night 72 at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland.

The event, the UFC’s first in Scotland, is set to take place just seven days after Conor McGregor’s featherweight title clash with Jose Aldo. Donegal’s Joseph Duffy, who’s been booked to take on Brazil’s Ivan Jorge, will also feature in Glasgow.

Having been called up on short notice, Redmond made his UFC debut in Sweden back in January. After a tough weight-cut, the 28-year-old put on a courageous display en route to a unanimous-decision loss to the highly-regarded Mirsad Bektic.

A team-mate of UFC flyweight Neil Seery, who’s also rumoured to be returning to action in Glasgow, Redmond trains at Team Ryano in Finglas and is a veteran of top European promotion Cage Warriors Fighting Championship, where he picked up seven big wins before being snapped up by the UFC.

His opponent, 32-year-old Whiteford, will have home advantage in Scotland. Whiteford has a 1-1 record in the UFC but hasn’t fought in over a year, having been forced to withdraw from a bout against Dennis Siver last October due to injury.

Redmond said: “I think a lot of fans will travel to Scotland. It’s going to be as big as UFC Dublin but this time in Glasgow. The crowd will be amazing and they’ll be getting behind their own fighters, I’m sure.

“I’m there to finish it. I want to get it finished before it goes to the judges. I’m out there to win and to make a statement. And to do that in Glasgow would be really special.”
