CILLIAN SHERIDAN APPEARS to be settling in well to life in Poland.

The Irish striker scored his first league goal for Jagiellonia Bialystok — a 79th-minute penalty — in their 1-0 win over Nieciecza at the weekend.

The victory took the Cavan native’s side to the top of the Polish league, one point above second-place Legia Warsaw (who had gone top after beating Pogoń 2-0 on Saturday), as the end-of-season run-in intensifies — the league is set to be split between the top eight and bottom eight at the end of this month, prior to the campaign’s final seven games.

Sheridan has started four league games for Jagiellonia Bialystok since joining the club at the end of February from Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia, helping them earn three wins and a draw in that time, while Sunday’s game was the first time the Irish striker has completed 90 minutes for his new team.

The 28-year-old recently told The42 that he hoped moving to Poland would enhance his chances of getting called up to the Irish squad.

It is seven years since Sheridan won the last of his three Ireland caps, but with Martin O’Neill’s options looking somewhat thin up front particularly since the retirement of Robbie Keane, the Irish boss suggested last month that he would be open to travelling out to see Sheridan play.

“If the FAI allow me to head out there I’ll do it,” he said. “I don’t see that being a major problem. And (getting back involved with Ireland) that was his reasoning for doing it? That’s very encouraging if that’s the case. I’ll try get myself across to see him.”
