SHANE BYRNE HAS been praised for his sporting prowess many times in the past, but today it’s his glorious mullet that’s getting all the attention.

The former Leinster and Ireland hooker topped a survey of Irish sports fans carried out by Brylcreem Paste to find out which sports star had the best haircut of the last 40 years.

Leaving our qualms about the methodological rigour of such a survey aside for a moment, the news of Byrne’s award did get us thinking. Was his mullet genuinely the best hairstyle of the last 40 years? Or did Byrne only get the nod because Troy Polamalu wasn’t free to come to the awards ceremony?
