A solution to rail strikes is "unlikely" this weekend

Start walking, so.

TWO DAYS OF industrial action that will shut down the train network tomorrow and Monday looks set to go ahead, with both sides saying that no move back to negotiations is forthcoming.

Members of the NBRU and SIPTU will strike tomorrow and Monday in response to Irish Rail pay cuts.

The company has insisted the cuts are essential, and said the strikes – which will impact travel to the All-Ireland football semi-final – are “insanity.”

Speaking to TheJournal.ie today, both sides said that they are open to negotiations, but each stressed that their side remains entrenched on the issue of pay cuts.

Dermot O’Leary of the NBRU said that their members are regretful that people have been affected, but says they are merely “reacting to what has been imposed on them”.

Barry Kenny of Irish Rail says that the two days of action will likely go ahead.

“We’ve said all along that we are available for talks, but we must implement the pay changes because of the financial realities of the company.

“This will affect all types of commuters.”
