ABOUT 150 OUTDOOR and engineering staff have served Roscommon County Council with strike notice.
Employees said they have not been properly consulted over a major reorganisation plan for the local authority.
Under local government reforms, new municipal structures come into effect from today. Workers are also concerned about staffing levels following the public service moratorium.
According to Shannonside, the council said it has fully consulted employees about the changes and will attend the Labour Relations Commission in an effort to resolve the dispute.
Unions and employees are obliged to co-operate with the implementation of the new structures, according to the terms of public service agreements.
Speaking on Shannonside, SIPTU Industrial Organiser Anthony McCormack said the council had failed to engage in “meaningful” discussion with the workers.
We’re not going to tolerate a situation where the management side can decide to cherry-pick the public service agreement and be compliant when it suits them and not when it doesn’t suit them.
It seems to be a bullyboy tactic on behalf of Roscommon County Council – trying to drive through change by ignoring the public service agreement.
