IT’S BEEN A good day for Ireland’s sailors at Weymouth today.

Annalise Murphy has sensationally won the two opening Laser Radial races to lead the class after day one. She took the first race by 15 seconds from Lithuania’s Gintare Scheidt of Lithuania before coming from behind to take the second.

Murphy ultimately won by 45 seconds ahead of Evi Van Acker of Belgium. There are eight more races to come before the medal race.

Earlier, Ryan Seaton and Matthew McGovern took an impressive fourth-place finish in today’s Olympic 49er class. France won the first 49er race of the Games after a sprint with Seaton and McGovern 30 seconds behind. Denmark came in second and Canada were third.

James Espey, meanwhile, finished in 38th place in the first Laser Class race of the day and lies in 42nd overall after two races. Controversy-hit Peter O’Leary and David Burrows finished 13th in the third race of the Star class.
