Leinster set to sign Wallabies international Scott Fardy as a second row

The 32-year-old is set to join after the current Super Rugby season.

LEINSTER ARE CLOSE to officially confirming the signing of Wallabies international Scott Fardy on a two-year deal.

The 32-year-old says he will join the Irish province following the completion of the 2017 Super Rugby season with his current club, the Brumbies.

The move was first reported by the Canberra Times in Australia, and sources in Ireland have this morning confirmed to the The42 that a deal is close to being officially announced.

The 6’6″ Sydney native has played the majority of his professional career as a blindside flanker, although he first broke through at the Brumbies in 2012 and 2013 as a second row.

The42 understands that Leinster, having been granted IRFU permission to sign an overseas lock, have recruited Fardy to play exclusively in the second row.

The eastern province have an eye-watering abundance of back row quality in their squad at present, but it’s understood that Fardy will not be considered for selection at the back of the Leinster scrum.

Fardy has won 39 caps for Australia and helped them into the final of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

“It’s still a big year ahead at the Brumbies and I’m looking forward to the season ahead in Canberra,” Fardy told the Canberra Times.

“I’m also excited about the chance to join Leinster next season. But I’ve got a lot that I want to achieve at the Brumbies and it should be a great year with the boys.”
