Séamus Power four off the lead after late slip in Bermuda
SÉAMUS POWER SUFFERED a late-round slip to sit four shots off overnight leader Chandler Blanchet at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
Returning to the site of his last victory in search of a full PGA Tour card, Power threatened the lead as he played the first 14 holes at Port Royal in seven under. However, he dropped two shots in his final four holes to sit tied for 20th after his opening round.
The Waterford man’s five-under-par 66 was still a solid start, but Power will seek to build on Thursday’s promise as he seeks control of his own schedule in 2027.
With this championship and three more remaining, the 39-year-old currently sits 103rd in the FedEx Cup Fall rankings, with the top 100 earning full status next year.
Power was four under for his front nine and dropped further birdies on 10, 12 and 14 to move within a shot of the lead.
A penalty drop from his tee shot and consequent bogey on 15 saw him drop to six under, before another error from the tee cost him another stroke on 16.
The 17th was a missed opportunity, with Power missing a 24-foot eagle putt before his five-foot birdie putt lipped out, leaving him with a par.
He parred again on 18 to head into Friday within reach of leader Blanchet and the chasing pack.
