Manchester United make Anthony Martial the most expensive teenager in world football

Louis van Gaal has made his sixth signing of the summer.

MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE completed the signing of French teenager Anthony Martial from Monaco for a fee believed to be €48 million (£36 million).

The forward moves to Old Trafford on a four-year deal with an option to extend for a further year.

Martial made 70 appearances for Monaco after moving to the Stade Louis II from Lyon in 2013. He scored 15 goals for the French club.

“I am so excited to be joining Manchester United. I have enjoyed my time at AS Monaco and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me,” he told Man United’s website.

“I have always wanted to play in the Premier League and to join the biggest club in the world is what every young footballer dreams of. I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and working with Louis van Gaal who has achieved so much in his career.”

The 19-year-old has represented France at underage level and was called-up to the senior national team last month. After breaking onto the scene, Martial has been compared with former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.

He becomes the most expensive teenager in world football, overtaking his new team-mate Luke Shaw who cost Man United €42 million (£31 million) last summer.

“Anthony is a naturally talented, young, multi-functional forward with great potential,” Louis van Gaal said. “We have been watching him for a while now and he has developed immensely during his time at AS Monaco.

“I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player. He has all the attributes to become a top football player; however we need to give him time to adjust to his new environment and the rhythm of the Premier League.”
