IT WAS A bad night at the Athletic Grounds with floodlight failure meaning there was no football played between Armagh and Antrim.
But there was action in Ballybofey when a last-minute goal by Ryan McHugh saw Donegal defeat Cavan, who had won the last four Ulster U21 titles, by 1-7 to 0-9.
While in Omagh, it was all too easy for Tyrone as they saw off Fermanagh by 0-17 to 0-7 and it ended 0-15 to 1-8 in favour of Monaghan against Derry in Inniskeen.
Recently we saw Tyrone v Monaghan get delayed after Healy Park was plunged into darkness and another Ulster game, this time at U21 level, was adversely impacted by a spontaneous lack of light tonight.
Unlike in that league game from a few weeks ago, the lights couldn’t be brought back on and the game had to be cancelled. At least the spectators will be able to enter for free on Sunday.
In Ballybofey, Ryan McHugh was the Donegal hero with his late goal. It marked a first defeat at Ulster U21 level in 14 games for Cavan. Donegal were ahead 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval but Cavan gained a grip on the game in the second-half and went clear before being pegged back at the death by the home side.
Tyrone enjoyed a comfortable ten-point win over Fermanagh. They were ahead 0-9 to 0-2 after the opening quarter and were comfortably clear by the final whistle.
Monaghan produced a strong second-half showing to see off Derry. It was Derry who were ahead 1-5 to 0-7 at the break but they were reduced to 14 men late on in the first-half and Monaghan outscored them 0-8 to 0-3 in the second-half.
