This close-up of Kevin Doyle's leg injury is not for the faint-hearted

Injury update better than first feared as Doyle stretchered off against Switzerland.

– Niall Kelly reports from the Aviva Stadium

KEVIN DOYLE PROMISED that he will be back in action “very soon” after this nasty leg injury cut his night short against Switzerland.

Doyle’s Euro 2016 hopes appeared to be hanging by a thread when he was stretchered off after just 27 minutes of Ireland’s 1-0 win in Dublin.

The Colorado Rapids striker came off second best in a 50/50 clash with Tim Klose and suffered a deep cut on his leg.

“Thanks for all the messages,” he said as he shared this picture of the injury on Twitter.

“Could have been worse, bit of surgery going on now and be back very soon.”

Speaking afterwards, Ireland boss Martin O’Neill confirmed that Doyle had not broken any bones and is expected to be fit in time to challenge for a place at the Euros.

“It’s a deep cut but they are cleaning it out,” he explained.

“There’s nothing broken which is great from that viewpoint. I think he’s undergoing anaesthetic at the minute to get stitched up and hopefully everything will be alright.”
