FINN HARPS HAVE bolstered their ranks for their promotion push with the loan signing of 24-year-old right-back John Kavanagh from Cork City.

Kavanagh will stay with the Donegal club until the end of the season, as they aim to secure an immediate return to the top flight.

“Hopefully he [Kavanagh] can play a part now in keeping us in contention for a place in the promotion play-offs,” said Finn Harps manager Ollie Horgan, whose side are currently in third place in the First Division.

“John has been with Cork since he was a teenager and knows what it’s like to play at a high level in the League of Ireland. Hopefully that experience will have a positive impact on our squad for the upcoming games.”

After establishing himself as a regular starter in the first-team at Cork City — which saw him called up to the Ireland U21 squad in 2015 — Kavanagh endured a difficult couple of years due to a problematic knee injury.

The attack-minded defender, who previously earned comparisons to Seamus Coleman, spent the first half of this season on loan at Waterford. He also had a brief loan stint at Cobh Ramblers in the First Division last season.

“This is an opportunity for John to get more games under his belt,” said Cork City manager John Caulfield. “He had a good spell at Waterford after coming back from a serious injury and for him, it is about getting as many games under his belt as he can.”

Yesterday, Derry City confirmed that central defender Niall Logue has also joined Finn Harps on loan until the end of the season.
