FIRST DAY OUT for Davy Fitzgerald in the new chapter of his hurling career with Wexford today in Gorey and he could scarcely have imagined a more straightforward game.
Wexford cruised to a 35-point success over an understrength UCD team in their Group 3 game in the Walsh Cup.
There was approximately 3,000 people at the Páirc Uí Siocháin venue to witness Fitzgerald’s arrival as Wexford boss and they saw the home side run out 5-31 to 1-8 victors.
Wexford stormed into a 4-12 to 1-5 interval lead to lay the foundations for their win and stretched their advantage further in the second half.
Goals from Barry Carton, Paul Morris, Cathal Dunbar, Harry Kehoe and Richie Kehoe helped Wexford triumph with Darragh Dolan raising the solitary green flag for UCD.
Elsewhere All-Ireland semi-finalists Galway secured a comfortable 1-30 to 0-12 win over the students of Dublin IT. Jason Flynn (0-7), Joseph Cooney (1-2), Thomas Monaghan (0-4) and Davy Glennon (0-4) all impressed in the scoring stakes for Micheal Donoghue’s side.
