Finn Harps stretch lead at top of the First Division with win over Athlone

It was a busy night in the second tier.

FINN HARPS STRETCHED their lead at top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division last night.

The Ballybofey side beat second-placed Athlone Town at home in an early season top-of-the-table clash.

Keith Cowan scored the winner with a 76th-minute header.

The spoils were shared in the Munster derby at the RSC in Waterford but not before some last-minute drama.

The Blues took the lead through Willie John Kiely after 50 minutes before Robert Waters equalised for Cobh Ramblers on 68 minutes.

Kiely could then have snatched the win for the hosts but he couldn’t convert an injury-time penalty.

Chris Mulhall scored twice for UCD away at Cabinteely as the Students ran out 2-0 winners. The strikes came at the start of each half – the first three minutes in and the second just after the interval.

The most goal-rich tie of the evening was played out at Tolka Park with Wexford Youths coming away with a 4-2 away win against Shels.

Mark Sandford put the Drumcondra side ahead after nine minutes before Gary Delaney equalised, Aidan Keenan put Youths ahead and the Danny Furlong scored from the spot. Conor Early made it 3-1 before Conor Whittle added a fourth for the visitors. Ryan Robinson was dismissed late on.
