19-year-old Aubrey McMahon wins 'Amateur Derby' as Galway Races get underway
NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Aubrey McMahon was the unlikely hero on the opening day of the Galway Races, winning the feature race at Ballybrit – the Connacht Hotel (Q.R.) Handicap.
McMahon steered 16/1 shot Whiskey Sour, owned by his father Luke and trained by Willie Mullins, to a two-and-three-quarter length win in the two-mile handicap, dubbed ‘the Amateur Derby.’
Last year’s winner Swamp Fox was sent off favourite but finished second with another of Mullins’ runners, Lagostovegas, ridden by Patrick Mullins a short head back in third.
