Gary Neville embroiled in Twitter row after controversial signing of Irish striker

Adam Rooney’s move from Aberdeen to Salford has provoked plenty of debate.

MAN UNITED LEGEND and Salford City co-owner Gary Neville has been accused of trying to “steal” an English Football League spot amid an argument with Accrington Stanley owner Andy Holt on Twitter.

The debate arose after Salford’s surprise capture of Adam Rooney from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen.

The 30-year-old Irish striker is reportedly set to earn £4,000-a-week following his controversial transfer to the non-league outfit.

In response to Holt’s accusation, Neville tweeted:  “Steal! I hope it’s yours now! We’ve invested millions.

“You seem to want a franchise league where the established can’t be challenged! We put a lot of money in and aren’t embarrassed about it.”

Holt, whose side were promoted to League One last season, suggested Accrington were operating on a £1.1 million budget, adding that there should be a cap on squad spending to prevent teams such as Salford “buying their way in”.

Salford have enjoyed plenty of success since their affiliation with a group of ex-Man United players, including Neville and Ryan Giggs, began.

The club have been promoted three times in the past four years, recently gaining a place in the National League for the first time in their history, after finishing top of the National League North last season.
