SÉAMUS HICKEY, Joe Canning and Henry Shefflin have all been honoured for their contribution to higher education hurling with a place in the Irish Daily Mail Fitzgibbon Cup Team of the Century.
The team, selected by a committee of former Fitzgibbon players and managers from 75-man shortlist, was announced today as part of the centenary celebrations of the Fitzgibbon Cup.
UCC and Tipperary great Nicky English is named in the full-forward line alongside Canning and Shefflin, while UCG’s Niall McInerney and UCC’s John Grainger join Hickey in the full-back line.
Goalkeeper Tommy Daly, winner of a record six Fitzgibbon Cups with UCD in the 1910s and 1920s, is the oldest player to be included.
The centenary Fitzgibbon Cup begins tomorrow evening in Cork with UCC hosting DCU in the Mardyke at 7pm.
