Ireland U19s beat Belgium, but narrowly miss out on Euro qualification

Swedish win denies Tom Mohan’s side their place in Georgia this summer.

IRELAND’S U19S FINISHED their Elite Round qualification campaign with a win — but narrowly missed out on a place at this summer’s European Championships in Georgia.

Defeat for Tom Mohan’s side against Sweden last weekend meant that they needed to beat hosts Belgium in their final Group 7 game this evening, and then hope that the Swedes could not beat Italy.

And while Ireland did everything within their own power, winning 1-0 courtesy of a Wout Faes own goal in the first half, Sweden also ran out 1-0 winners.

The results left both sides on six points with Sweden progressing by virtue of their superior head-to-head record.

They will join hosts Georgia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Netherlands, and Portugal in the eight-team summer tournament.
