All the tries as Ireland U20s secure place in World Championship final

Nigel Carolan’s men are into a World Championship final.

NIGEL CAROLAN’S IRELAND U20s have earned a place in the World Rugby U20 Championship, the first time an Irish side has ever advanced into the decider at this level.

Ireland beat Argentina 37-7 in their semi-final in Manchester.

Ulster fullback Jacob Stockdale crossed to score inside the opening 10 minutes as he accepted a pass from centre Shane Daly to dive over.

The score stemmed from a powerful Irish maul, with out-half Johnny McPhillips firing a cross-field kick wide to the right from the set-piece. After Matthew Byrne chase hard, Daly seized the loose ball and fed Stockdale.

Following a superb conversion from McPhillips, the second try arrived on the 22-minute mark as impressive number eight Max Deegan picked off an Argentina lineout move and showed searing pace to finish from long range.

Ireland’s third score was all about the back three as Byrne and left wing Hugo Keenan combined superbly to send Stockdale bursting through to beat the final defender for his second try.

With the composed McPhillips converting all three tries and the scrum clearly on top, Ireland’s half-time position was a strong one.

The Argentinians did manage to bring themselves into the game before the break as captain Juan Cruz Mallia got on the end of a clever grubber kick for a try converted by Domingo Miotti.

Arg Try

The place kicking of McPhillips continued to impress in the second half as Argentina’s shocking lack of discipline allowed Ireland to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Kick

A red card for Argentina replacement Santiago Pulella for a headbutt ensured Ireland could end a dominant performance on top, although substitute hooker Vincent O’Brien was sin binned in the dying moments.

Ireland still managed to finish with a bang as midfielder Daly picked off an Argentina pass for try number four.

Ireland will take on either South Africa or England in Saturday’s final at 7pm in AJ Bell Stadium.
