GRAEME MCDOWELL HAD one of the shots of the day as the World Cup of Golf began in Royal Melbourne.
McDowell holed out from the fairway for a brilliant eagle two on the par-four ninth hole.
But that was as good as it got for the Irish team with McDowell and partner Shane Lowry both failing to fire.
On a day when only 12 of the 60-man field broke par, McDowell scored one-over while Lowry finished on four-over.
Their combined score of five-over leaves them in 16th place overall, ten shots off the early pace set by Denmark (Thomas Bjorn and Thorbjorn Olesen) and USA (Kevin Streelman and Matt Kuchar).
Bjorn and Streelman had the best individual rounds of day one with five-under par 66s while Wales’ Stuart Manley, Korea’s KJ Choi and Scotland’s Martin Laird were a shot back with 67s.
