Sligo's McGuinness named player of the month

Sligo Rovers centre-half Jason McGuinness picks up the September award for his role in the Bit O’Red’s title run-in.

SLIGO ROVERS DEFENDER Jason McGuinness has won the Airtricity/Soccer Writers Association of Ireland Player of the Month award for September.

The 30-year-old was at the heart of a Bit O’Red back four which only conceded two goals in September as the club wrapped up its first league title since 1977.

A 3-2 win against rivals St Patrick’s Athletic last weekend clinched McGuinness’s third league medal following on from his title-winning seasons with Bohemians in 2008 and 2009.

“I’m absolutely delighted to win the Player of the Month award, it really tops off what has been a fantastic season”, the defender told SligoRovers.com.

“I suppose goalscorers usually get it, but I’m really thankful.

“But I have to say that I would never be in a position to win something like the Player of the Month without the help of my team-mates.”

Shamrock Rovers midfielder Ronan Finn was the runner-up with McGuinness’s team-mate Raffaele Cretaro in third.
