IRELAND’S JASON SMYTH set a new championship record after he stormed to a gold medal in the 200m T13 final at the World Para-Athletics European Championships in Berlin.
The Derry sprinter, who is unbeaten at international level since 2005, led from the first bend in lane four and scorched the field as he crossed the finishing line in a time of 21.44 – a new championship record.
Smyth was followed by Poland’s Mateusz Mateusz in second place and Octavian Vasile Tucaliuc who took third place.

Meanwhile, Greta Streimikyte also won a gold medal in the T13 1500m to complete a brilliant day for team Ireland at the event in Berlin.
The Lithuanian-born runner was the clear winner as she stormed to victory after a solid performance.

Meath’s Paul Keogan narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s 400m T37 final after he was edged out at the line.
Rio silver medallist Orla Barry will be competing in the Womens Discus F57 final this evening.
