THE NUMBER OF Irish players at Ipswich has increased again, after Jonathan Douglas officially signed for the club today on a one-year deal.

Douglas joins Daryl Murphy, David McGoldrick and Jay Tabb, as well as youngsters Dylan Connolly and Adam McDonnell among the Irish contingent at the Tractor Boys.

The Monaghan native stated via Twitter that he was “delighted” with the move, while thanking Brentford’s staff and supporters for their support during his time there.

The midfielder added: “When a club like Ipswich comes in for you then you have to take notice and the gaffer didn’t really have to persuade me to come, it was a no brainer.

“I’ve known the gaffer for a few years, from speaking to him on and off and playing against his sides over the years.

“I think he actually tried to sign me before when I was at Leeds so I’m delighted to finally get the chance to play under him and I can’t wait to get started.

“Ipswich is a huge Club and there’s a good squad here. The boys went close last season by getting to the Play-Offs and hopefully we can go one better this time around.”

At 33, Douglas is an experienced lower league player, and enjoyed one of his best campaigns last season, as he captained a Brentford side that unexpectedly made the Championship playoffs, contributing eight goals in 46 appearances in the process.

Recently appointed Brentford coach Marinus Dijkhuizen previously said Douglas was free to leave the club, telling reporters:

“He is not part of the squad and is training separately. There is no future for him. We decided it is better for him to move on — for his future and for the future of Brentford.”

Former Blackburn and Leeds player Douglas was capped eight times by Ireland between 2004 and 2007.

After the departures of Noel and Stephen Hunt at the end of last season, the number of Irish players in Ipswich’s squad now stands at six.

Mick McCarthy’s side will be hopeful of challenging for promotion to the Premier League again this year, after they narrowly lost out via the playoffs last season.
