AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Liverpool v Manchester City, Capital One Cup final

It was over to Wembley Stadium, where Jurgen Klopp was looking to win his first piece of silverware as Reds boss.

Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City (Man City win 3-1 on penalties)

IT’S LEAGUE CUP final day as Liverpool and Manchester City meet this afternoon (4.30pm kick-0ff).

The Reds have won the competition a record 8 times, the last of which was 2012, while 2014 winners City will be looking to get their hands on the trophy for the fourth time.

The teams are in. Liverpool are unchanged while City bring second choice goalkeeper Willy Caballero in with Joe Hart named on the bench.

The half-and-half scarves are out in force at the sold-out Wembley Stadium.

Capital One Cup final pi

1 min – KICK-OFF – We’ve just got underway here. Both teams in their traditional home colours.

In the very first minute, Firmino and Sturridge link up before Moreno shots at goal from a narrow angle. Caballero gets down to save.

5 mins - Coutinho attempts a ‘no look’ pass into the path of Clyne but it’s slightly over-hit. Liverpool have started quite brightly.

7 mins – Clyne fouls Sterling and City have a free-kick in a dangerous area. Silva delivers the cross, which is headed out as far as Fernandinho. The Brazilian attempts a first time volley but blasts it well over the bar.

15 mins - A nasty clash of heads involving Sakho and Can has left the two Liverpool players on the ground needing treatment.

20 mins - Fine play from Sterling forces Henderson into committing a foul and City get another free-kick in a similar position. The outcome is the same as the delivery is headed clear.

23 mins – WOODWORK! Aguero steps inside past Lucas and Sakho after Silva’s through ball and aims a shot at the bottom corner. Mignolet gets a hand to the ball to touch it onto the post.

Best chance we’ve had so far.

SUBSTITUTION – He’s not happy about it, but Sakho is coming off after that blow to the head.

The player protests but the Liverpool medical team and Klopp have decided the Frenchman shouldn’t play on. Good to see with all the recent talk about head injuries and concussion.

In his place, comes the great Kolo Toure.

Kolo

31 mins - Fernandinho brings down Sturridge just outside the box. Milner plays the free short to Coutinho and the little Brazilian drills the ball across the face of the goal.

34 mins – Moreno then goes down in the penalty area under pressure from Fernandinho but it looks a dive and play continues.

42 mins - Lucas fouls Aguero and gets a talking to by referee Michael Oliver. Could easily have picked up a yellow card for that challenge.

From the resulting free-kick, Otamendi throws himself to the ground after a tackle from Milner.

45 mins - 2 additional minutes to be played at the end of the first half.

HALF-TIME: Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City

46 mins – RESTART… The second half has just begun.

49 mins – GOAL! Liverpool 0-1 Manchester City (Fernandinho)

City are ahead! Aguero feeds Fernandinho and the midfielder drills the ball at goal from an acute angle. Mignolet gets down but allow the ball to slip in under his body.

Another high profile mistake from the Reds goalkeeper.

Fruity / Streamable

55 mins - Milner shoots wide after neat build-up play from Sturridge. He should be doing better with that.

60 mins – WHAT A MISS! How have City not added a second? Sterling is played in by Silva but somehow manages to send his shot wide of the post. Poor finishing.

62 mins – PENALTY SHOUT. Aguero runs clear from the halfway line and is chased by Moreno, who sticks out a leg in an effort to stop the Argentine striker. No penalty given.

65 mins – YELLOW CARD: Moreno picks up a booking and Silva curls the resulting free-kick just over the bar.

70 mins – SUBSTITUTION - Adam Lallana comes on for Moreno and Jurgen Klopp is going with three at the back in a bid to find an equaliser.

80 mins - Sterling wastes another good chance and Divock Origi has been introduced for Firmino.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City (Coutinho)

1-1! Sterling puts the ball across the goalmouth, Lallana hits the post and Coutinho follows up to roll into the net.

Fruity / Streamable

89 mins - Credit to Mignolet, who has made two vital saves in the last few minutes to keep City out.

Four minutes of time added on the play.

94 mins – Full-time: Liveprool 1-1 Manchester City

Don’t go anywhere, extra-time to come.

EXTRA-TIME - Double change for City as Jesus Navas and Pablo Zabaleta are introduced for Fernando and Sagna.

105 mins - Mignolet makes another finger-tip save to keep Aguero out. He has made up  for his earlier mistake.

Half-time (extra-time): Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City

109 mins – CHANCE! Caballero saves from Origi’s header, then keeps out a Sturridge free-kick.

Wilfried Bony has also come on David Silva.

115 mins - The Brazilian has slotted into the centre-half role remarkably well.

111 mins – Opportunities at both ends. Origi  is inches away from making contact with a through ball, then Aguero puts his attempted lob over the bar after a gift from Milner.

120 mins - One minutes to play. It looks like this one is going to penalties… unless I’ve just jinxed it.

116 mins - Tempers are boiling over. Yaya Toure and Adam Lallana engage in a bit of handbags and both players pick up yellow cards.

120 mins – Full-time (extra-time):  Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City

Penalties it is!

Here we go then… Emre Can up first for Liverpool.

GOAL! Can with a beautiful dink down the middles, 1-0 Liverpool.

MISS! Fernandinho hits the woodwork, 1-0 Liverpool.

SAVE! Caballero keeps out Lucas, still 1-0 Liverpool.

GOAL! Navas scores to make it 1-1.

SAVE! Coutinho stutters his run, and is stopped by Caballero, 1-1.

GOAL! Aguero puts City in front, 2-1.

SAVE! BIG WILLY DOES IT AGAIN! The Brazilian keeps out Adam Lallana, 2-1.

GOAL! Yaya Toure scores and MANCHESTER CITY ARE THE CAPITAL ONE CUP CHAMPIONS!

An emotional Caballero is being interviewed by Sky Sports after his heroics in the shootout.

It’s a lovely moment for the back-up goalkeeper, who is the only player to feature in every match in the competition this season.
