FROZEN OUT BY Manchester United, Bastian Schweinsteiger is the latest player signed by Louis van Gaal to leave Old Trafford after failing to make any real impact at the club.
The German midfielder is heading to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire after an unhappy sting in England with United after being recruited by van Gaal in July 2015.
Schweinsteiger had found himself in exile at Man United since the arrival of Jose Mourinho and was forced to train with the club’s reserves for the first part of the season.
He did work his way into Mourinho’s first team squad before Christmas and made his first appearance of the campaign against West Ham in the EFL Cup in November. He made three appearances since with his last outing coming against Saint-Etienne in February.
With Man United granting him permission to leave, Schweinsteiger now joins the likes of Angel di Maria and Memphis Depay in departing after short and unsuccessful spells at Old Trafford.
During his ill-fated tenure, van Gaal made 13 signings, spending a total of £248 million. Less than a year after his sacking, six of those players have now moved on with Mourinho selling four in a little over nine months.
Radamel Falcao (loan), Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Valdes are the others who have gone through the exit door, with the futures of Luke Shaw, Sergio Romero, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind far from certain.
