THE FORMER SUNDERLAND and Ipswich goalkeeper Marton Fulop has died at 32, following a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.
The Hungarian initially moved to England in 2004 when he joined Tottenham but never made a competitive appearance for the senior side, spending loan spells with Chesterfield, Coventry and Sunderland instead.
Roy Keane brought him to the Stadium of Light permanently in 2007 and he made 47 appearances for the side, though he seemed to enjoy a temporary stint at Leicester where he spent a season.
In 2010, he was signed on an emergency loan deal by Manchester City and played three Premier League games.
After that, he joined up with Keane again at Ipswich and spent a season at Portman Road before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2011.
The following year, Fulop left English football and signed for Greek side Asteras Tripoli but in early 2013, he started experiencing issues with his arm and was operated on in April. However, a malignant tumour was found and removed that summer.
At the time, Fulop, who won 24 Hungarian caps, said. “I am sure that after a few months I will be ready both physically and mentally to continue playing football”.
