Meath decide not to keep O’Brien on

Leinster title not enough for Meath as county board vote not to renew O’Brien’s contract.

THE MEATH COUNTY board last night voted not to extend Eamonn O’Brien’s contract as manager of the county footballers.

O’Brien won the Leinster Senior Football Championship this year, the Royal county’s first since 2001. But the county board voted 32-29 not to extend his contract at a meeting last night.

The management committee of the county board had previously recommended that O’Brien’s contract be extended.

The Irish Times reports that several delegates voiced their opposition to the decision at last night’s meeting, including central council member Brendan Cummins, noted that Meath “would be a laughing stock if they got rid of a man who had guided the county to All-Ireland semi-final and quarter-final places as well as that provincial success.”

Clubs will now be asked to nominate candidates for the position, with strong speculation linking RTE’s Colm O’Rourke to the job.
