The 29-year-old, who won two Olympic medals for Ireland before turning moving on from the amateur game last year, had earned victory in his pro debut in bizarre circumstances last November as Bulgarian Stefan Slavchev suffered a disqualification.

In front of his hometown fans at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall, Barnes faced Adrian Dimas Garzon of Argentina ahead of Jamie Conlan’s headliner with Yader Cardoza for the vacant WBC international super-flyweight title.

And, now going by the nickname ‘The Leprechaun, he put in a solid performance against his limited opponent to claim all six rounds and record a comfortable 60-54 win.
