Paralympic Breakfast: Ireland’s Firth hoping to continue her success

Yes folks, Saturday’s gold rush DID actually happen.

EVERY MORNING, WE bring you all of the info you need to make sure you don’t miss a second of Paralympic gold.

Was it all a wonderful dream? Team Ireland awoke this morning with a massive smile on its face, before the doubt hit home.

A quick pat-down brings relief. Yes, thanks to Darragh McDonald, Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop,  the nation still has three hunks of gold draped around our neck.

Stop biting them! There’s another big day ahead.

Who’s flying the flag

James Dwyer will be in action soon enough, as he features in the equestrian grade IV event, which begins at 9am. And at the same time Ireland feature in the BC1-2 boccia mixed team preliminary round.

In the velodrome, Catherine Walsh & Francine Meehan take part in the individual pursuit B qualifiers from 10am, which also includes Katie-George Dunlevy & Sandra Fitzgerald. The mixed team sprint C1-5 final is at 11.35am.

The athlete who started the gold rush, Bethany Firth, is hoping to add to her recent success, as she participates in the 200m free S14 heats at approximately 10.01am today. In addition, Heather Jameson is also in action in the 100m T37 heats, from roughly 10.36am.

Down in Weymouth; John Twomey, Ian Costelloe and Anthony Hegarty will be in the three-person keelboat, beginning at 11am,

At 3pm, Roy Guerin features in the 67.5KG powerlifting. It’s a stunning spectacle at the best of times, but Guerin is Ireland’s first competitor since 1968.

And finally, at 4.15pm, Helen Kearney and Geraldine Savage will both be competing in the equestrian grade Ia at 4.15pm.

Do not miss

Athletics

That man Oscar Pistorius broke the 200m record in his qualifying heat yesterday. He’ll be out to finish the job and retain his Paralympic sprint  title. The T44 final is the prime time event tonight at 9.15pm.

Pistorius’ is by no means the only sprint final, though. We’ll also have finals in the women’s 100m (T12, T27, T44 and T53) 200m (T11) along with the men’s 10om  (T52 and T54), 200m (T46) and 400m finals (T53 and T13). The night will be closed by the T55 5ooom at 9.49pm.

Wheelchair basketball

If you possibly can, get to a TV around 7pm. The medal favourites USA and Team GB meet in a preliminary match and it’s going to be good.

5-a-side football

It’s always interesting when GB meet Argentina. Their 3pm clash this afternoon will be absolutely no exception.
