BRITISH VETERAN PAULA RADCLIFFE will not compete in the marathon at London 2012 due to a foot injury.

The 38-year-old undertook a fitness test this weekend to assess her chances of overcoming a long-standing problem with osteoarthritis.

However, Radcliffe failed the test and will not take part in the 26.2 mile event.

UK Athletics will now have to take a decision about whether or not to call up a replacement for Radcliffe.

It’s heartbreaking news for Radcliffe whose form outside the Olympics has marked her as one of long distance running’s stars

However, the games have not been kind to her over the years.

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, she was forced to stop mid-race and dissolved into tears.

She was also hampered by injury four years ago in Beijing when she trailed home in the marathon in 23rd place after a stress fracture had disrupted her training.
