IRELAND’S SIX-TRY win over Romania this afternoon will live long in the memory of those in attendance at Wembley – but it will be a day Florin Surugiu will remember for the rest of his life.
An official crowd of 89,297 crammed inside one of the world’s iconic stadiums to break the Rugby World Cup attendance and they were treated to an action-packed afternoon.
And the talking points continued after the full-time whistle.
After both sides had soaked up the appreciation of the crowd, Romania stayed on the pitch for what appeared to be a squad photo at the home of English football.
However, it was all part of a romantic plan.
With the fans filtering out of the ground and his team-mates standing behind, scrum-half Surugiu got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend – and she said yes!
Although it appears he didn’t have the backing of everyone. In his post-match press conference, Romania coach Lynn Howells revealed he tried to talk Surugiu out of it.
“I tried to advise him not to, but there you go,” Howells said of the proposal. “It’s too romantic for me.”
Tries, a record crowd and a marriage proposal – this game had it all.
