HE’S CURRENTLY IN Hartlepool as his Sunderland side play a pre-season friendly at Victoria Park tonight but the game looks like being Sam Allardyce’s last official engagement as the club’s manager.
According to widespread reports, the 61-year-old will be announced as England manager as early as tomorrow.
He takes over from Roy Hodgson who resigned following the humiliating Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland.
Hull boss Steve Bruce was also in the mix and had spoken to the Football Association earlier this week.
But, it would seem the FA had always earmarked Allardyce for the role and he was always the front-runner, especially considering David Moyes is reported to be very close to agreeing a deal to take over at the Stadium of Light.
It’s clear that Sunderland accepted early on that they were set to lose the former West Ham, Newcastle and Bolton manager.
Allardyce first began his coaching career in the League of Ireland First Division with Limerick and guided them to the league title before returning to the UK and taking in spells in charge of Preston, Blackpool and Notts County.
His first competitive game in charge of the English national team will be a World Cup qualifier against Slovakia on 4 September.
