MASTERS HERO SERGIO Garcia shot a one-over par 73 to tie for 66th place after the opening round of The Players Championship on Sunday.

However, after three bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine, the Spaniard’s round could have been much worse were it not for a spectacular hole-in-one on the 17th, the famed par-three island hole.

Garcia said it was nice to post an ace after getting off to a rocky beginning. He is just the eighth player to shoot a one in Players Championship history.

“The feeling was great. I hit a good shot, but it can go there, it can go three yards past. I don’t know, it can do anything.

“It was nice to see it bounce and kind of spin back into the hole. Maybe because I needed it after the start I had.”
