TWO SECOND-HALF goals was the difference between St Mary’s, Caherciveen and Hollymount-Carramore in Croke Park in the AIB All-Ireland intermediate club football final today.

Kerry legend Maurice Fitzgerald was at the helm as St Mary’s crossed the line in first place to seal All-Ireland intermediate glory five years after the club won the junior title.

Both sides went in locked level at 0-6 each at the break but five minutes into the second half a flowing move that ran the full length of the pitch was finished to the net by Daniel Daly to set St Mary’s on their way to victory.

Points from Bryan Sheehan and Seán Cournane followed over the next three minutes to stretch their lead out to five points.

The decisive score of the game came in the 40th minute when a speculative lobbed ball in was misjudged by Declan Ferrick in the Mayo side’s full-back line and Anthony Cournane was on hand to flick the ball past Niall Campbell and put the Kerry side eight clear.

Hollymount-Carramore did fight back and closed the gap back to four points with eight minutes to go thanks to scores from Darren Coen (twice), Kevin Costello and Robert Molloy.

Molloy’s chance could have been a goal only for a great block by a St Mary’s defender.

But the champions showed the class over the closing stages staying calm and tacking on points from subs Liam O’Connell and Darren Casey to seal a six point win at the final whistle.
