FORMER IRELAND INTERNATIONAL Stephen Hunt has backed Wexford Youths to earn promotion to the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division tonight.

Youths, who sit eight points clear at the top of the First Division table, can claim the title and a place in the top flight of Irish football for the first time in the club’s short history with a win at home to Athlone Town this evening.

There has been some skepticism about the prospect of Shane Keegan’s side making the step up, but after training with the club, Hunt has commended their professionalism.

“Good luck to the lads and staff of Wexford Youths tonight,” Hunt tweeted. “Some people don’t want you guys in the Premier so make sure you get over the line tonight.

“Having trained with you, your attitude and skill level are at a high level so I’m not surprised you’re top. Your manager and staff do their homework on teams and deserve lots of credit.

“Most important with the big crowd expected tonight, which is great but don’t forget what got you guys this situation — The TEAM. Good luck for the rest of the season.”
